III (Reminiscence III)

Following the previous Top 3 songs I posted, 사랑할수록 (The More I Love) and Never Ending Story, finally, the best of all, 회상 III (Reminiscence III). I’ve actually started writing this post on August 2010, but since I want it to stay on top of my blog everytime, I decided to save it for last. I don’t know yet whether this is gonna be the last post or not, but now I’m publishing it as a commemoration of “Boohwal~BORN AGAIN: Korea’s Legendary Musicians” first anniversary~ ^_^

In this original version of “Reminiscence III” (1987), Kim Tae-Won did most of the singing. As you know, his singing voice is more than mere husky. But I think it’s really beautiful, you can feel, I can feel all of the emotion that are really meant for the girl in the lyrics. For he did compose and write this song, inspired by the girl who is now his wife. Actually, in the first video (the original version inserted in Boohwal’s second album), the “nanana” part was sung by this “girl”.

The lyrics I put here is the lyrics matching to the original “회상 III”, that is most part sung by Kim Tae-Won except for the very last part which was sung by Boohwal’s lead vocal. However, in the latter version, as you can see in the second video which was quite recent (2006), Kim Tae-Won no longer sang the “밖으로 나가버리고” part anymore, leaving it to lead vocal Jeong Dong-Ha. In minute 4.50, Jeong Dong-Ha gave the mike to the audience and they sung the song wrong. It was suppose to be the part Kim Tae-Won sings, but the audience sung the “밖으로 나가버리고” part. So he said, “it’s not that~~” and there was some mis there.. (I’d say that’s the beauty of live performances: it ain’t always perfect, they’re human beings. But they’re perfectly doing their best. And there’s always a different color in every single stage^^_)

The same case with the version sung together with Kim Jong-Seo in the third video (2009). Now, question: why did I insert the third video where other Boohwal members didn’t even appear except for Kim Tae-Won? Because this is actually the very first video that I ever watched of Kim Tae-Won (I didn’t know about Boohwal then) and it was his voice which dragged me to be Boohwal’s loyal fan. Yes, I also happen to like Kim Jong-Seo, and what a coincidence that Kim Jong-Seo was actually Boohwal’s first vocalist. Before Boohwal released their first album in 1986, Kim Tae-Won had another band called “The End” and Kim Jong-Seo was the vocalist for this band. Thus he is one person you can’t totally exclude from Boohwal’s history after all.

The fourth video is really unique. It’s a rap version of “Reminiscence III”  sung by 조PD, featured in Boohwal’s 10th album [서정] released in 2005. The last video was from a special album dedicated to Boohwal’s 25th birthday, in which “Reminiscence III” was sung by Mun Hee-Jun.

Boohwal’s 2nd Album [Remember] =1987=

지금 슬픈 내모습을 무대뒤의 한소녀 (at my pitiful look now, a girl behind the stage..)
애써 눈물 참으며 바라보고 있네 (trying hard to hold her tears, looking at me)
무대뒤에 그소녀는 작은 의자에 앉아 (behind the stage, the girl sits on a small chair)
두손 곱게 모으고 바라보며 듣네  (she put her two hands together, listening, while looking at me)
나의 애기를 오 (my story.. oh..)

My favorite (Kim Tae-Won + Jeong Dong-Ha) =2006=

소녀는 나를 알기에 더더욱 슬퍼지네 (the girl knows me, thus she becomes even sadder)
노래는 점점흐르고 소녀는 울음을 참지 못해 (the song is flowing, the girl couldn’t hold her crying)
밖으로 나가 버리고 노래는 끝이 났지만 (she got out, even though the song hadn’t finished)
이젠 부르지 않으리 예 (now I’m not singing it..)
이 슬픈노래 (this sad song)

Kim Jong-Seo + Kim Tae-Won

이 노래가 긑이 나면 많은 사람 환호 (if this song ends, the cheers of many people in the audience)
뒤로 앉채 소녀에게 다가가 말없이 안아주리 (approaching the girl sitting in the back, without a word giving her a hug)

소녀는 나를 알기에 더더욱 슬퍼지네 (the girl knows me, thus she becomes even sadder)
노래는 점점흐르고 소녀는 울음을 참지 못해 (the song is flowing, the girl couldn’t hold her crying)

Boohwal’s 10th Album [서정] (Feat.조PD) =2005=

밖으로 나가버리고 노래는 끝이 났지만 (she got out, even though the song hadn’t finished)
이젠 부르지 않으리 예 (now I’m not singing it..)
이 슬픈노래 (this sad song)

나나나나 (nananana)

[Song Book] Mun Hee-Jun =2009=

A little bit “behind the story” about “Reminiscence III”, if I may. As I told you, the song was written and composed by Kim Tae-Won for the woman who now becomes his wife. Most part of the song was sang by him and it was inserted in Boohwal’s Second album [Remember]. But the album didn’t sell. Lee Seung-Cheol, who was Boohwal vocal then left the band for a solo career. He then remade the song and sung it solo, after re-titling it to “The Last Concert” (마지막 콘서트). The latter song has more ballad feelings to it, with piano opening and all, and it made a hit in Korea. A lot of people now remember this song as Lee’s “The Last Concert”, despite it is originally Boohwal’s, Kim Tae-Won’s “Reminiscence III”.

Spider Web (거미의 줄)

Boohwal’s 10th album is of course arguably one of Boohwal’s best album, which is probably why I’ve posted almost every song in that album. This song is particularly special, not because it is written and composed by Kim Tae-Won, also for the fact it was sung by the legend himself, but also the story behind it that delivers a message out of the writer’s own experience.

Two years ago, Kim Tae-Won told the story behind this song. A research on drug effects were conducted on spider. The spider effected by drugs built really thin spider web, narrow, unable to attract any flies, and finally die of starvation. The spider unaffected by anything builds a normal spider web

Standing on this thin string, I am different from anybody else

The story of my own place, my own time

Stories that made me stronger and difficult stories I heard on TV all my life

Makes me tipsy for a short while only, I’m still the same way as I am everyday

살아온 동안             my whole life
살아가는대로          the way of life
살아가는 시간에         the time
살아있는대로               life itself..

[9th Album] Over the Rainbow

Boohwal’s 9th Album, “Over the Rainbow”, released in 2003, and the repackage series released in 2004. This was before Jeong Dong Ha joined Boohwal. The band had 5 members then. Aside from Kim Tae Won on guitar, Seo Jae Hyuck on bass, and Chae Je Min on drum, Eom Soo Han (keyboard) and Jeong Dan (vocal) were in the band.

The 9th album also marked Boohwal’s first attempt to get into the Chinese market, by making the Chinese version of “아름다운 사실” (Beautiful Truth) titled 美麗的事實 in Chinese. And I’ve only known today that they also remade the song “사랑할수록”  (The More I Love) and made a Chinese version of it for the repackage version of this album, titled 雪夜的街* in Chinese.

*my Chinese friend translates it as “the street in a snowy night”

Boohwal Collaboration Concert + Yozoh [12.02.2011]

Tonight.. well it’s pass 12 am, so yesterday was likely my last Boohwal concert in Korea coz I’ll be leaving soon enough. Yesterday concert.. was literally the best… it’s definitely among the ones I’ll remember the most.. (there was my first concerts on March last year, EBS concert on April last year, festival in Ajou University and the Concert on May, the free concert on Namsan NTOK in the summer, Green Plugged also in May, Music Storage on my graduation day in August, TBS Concert in the Dream Forest, their appearance while judging for Office Workers Band .. there are just so many.. and I can still recall the details of each one…) I’ll miss them.. Literally, Boohwal could be the thing I’d miss the most about Korea. It’s been the most colorful year for me.. and all thanks to Boohwal….

Okay… we’ll jump to the concert review now.. First, my seat was spot on, first line. IN FRONT!! I never got front seat before (they’re always sold out within 20 minutes the tickets were opened) but tonight, I was in front. The bassist Seo Jae-Hyuck stood right in front of me. *love love love* ^-^

Originally my seat was one of the purple squares, but latter on I got away with the front seat so I was sitting at the red circle. *A-W-E-S-O-M-E* (really funny that me and my friends came together but we sat separately tho^^;)

The concert started with Yozoh’s performance. I didn’t know any of her songs and I didn’t like any of her videos I found on youtube but Live, she’s different. She’s amazing. She has a nice color, and her music is the kind you’d hear when you just feel like relaxing. And the idea is also refreshing, I like the lyrics^^ Also, I loooove the guy who plays percussion for her~My eyes were mostly transfixed on him almost all the time: both because he’s awesome and he’s right in front of me ^^

The ambiance was very quiet though when she was on stage, I think that’s because she’s quite awkward (^^;) and also because of her music style. Jeong Dong-Ha came to sing duet for her song titled “우리는 선처럼 가만히 누워” (Let’s stay still lying down) – it was really eye-opening. Honestly, I’ve kinda started to take Dongha Oppa’s voice for granted coz I’m just soo used to it coz I always watch Boohwal live all the time. But his voice was really different – very.. soothing…  in this duet. Love it! And then they sung “Falling Slowly” in duet. Yozoh’s concert continues… She sings a lot of her own songs (which I heard for the first time) and one remake song from Boohwal’s 5th album titled “또 다른 미로” (Yet Another Labyrinth).

Next in line is the guest of the night, Park Wan Gyu, the first partner in this collaboration project^^ He sang “사랑한 후에” (After loving you), followed by “비밀” (Secret) in collaboration with Boohwal… and of course, followed with “Lonely Night” which he sung together with Jeong Dong-Ha^^

Follows was Boohwal’s concert.. they continued with 사랑해서 사랑해서 (Because I Love You), which was followed by introduction. I cut my recording here coz I worried they’d run out of  battery s0 I couldn’t exactly recall the titles of each songs.. T_T

They followed with 소나기 (Rain Shower), 생각이나 (Thought), 가능성 (Possibility) – with Yozoh, and my recording was cut again… -_-; Among other they sang (not in order) 사랑 (Love), a combined solo bass-drum-guitar which I missed recording (tell me how much I hate myself..), 사랑할수록 (The More I Love), 21C 불경기, 추억이면 (A Different Lane of Memory), and my friends.. who were sitting on the purple squares I told you previously were spotted by Seo Jae-Hyuck. How much I wished I was sitting next to her, yet also felt glad it wasn’t me on the spotlight.. lol ^^ Anyways… they continued with 너뿐이야 (Only You), 1970, Someday, and 비와 당신의 이야기” (The Story of You and the Rain) as the last songs.

They sung “회상 III” (Reminiscence III) and [“희야”(Heeya) – with Yozoh] for the first call for anchor, and “Never Ending Story” for the final anchor.

Left to Right: 서재혁, 채제민, session (2nd guitarist) 이성민, 요조, 정동하, 김태원, session (keyboardist) 장지원

Ow, btw, if you follow [Star Audition] 위대한 탄생… I know who the 4 guys Kim Tae-Won chose to mentor already. And I must say… I figure.. except for one person unseen in the concert tonight.. I was kinda rooting for him besides from the guy I saw today. Niweis~ ^^

Stars’ Diary: Seo Jae-Hyuck (5)

A New Path, Over the Bass

Released 5 August 2010, 9.58 am (edited 10.05 am)

= Finally, the final version of Seo Jae-Hyuck’s Star’s Diary I started last year. It’s been so late, has it ^^ Check here for the complete version 1-5=

When one thought of Boohwal Seo Jae-Hyuck, bass always comes to mind. A musical instrument he’s spent 20 years with. The affection is as sweet as newly weds, thick and strong. Of course it’s not always turbulent. That’s how it is these days. There’s a change in Seo Jae-Hyuck’s heart. The love is the same as always. But he feels some indication of affairs.

“왜 그런지 모르겠지만, 베이스 연주가보다 창작가로 불리는 게 더 기분 좋다.”

“I don’t know why, but I prefer being called a composer than a bassist.”

The time he’s spending with bass is decreasing bit by bit. Instead, he holds the pen in his hands and draw bean sprouts (musical notes). The hand drawing those curves is very smooth. It’s been 17 years since he first started composing music. Under the bass’ shades, he developed his skills without others noticing.

There’s no special reason why he writes songs. He just think of it as a passage to be a musician. He writes most of his songs in the church. He gains experience by developing various prayer songs (hymns). His spirit is as high as his dreams with music.  Even when he was still in the police school (military service) he almost never skipped church to write songs.

=Seo Jae-Hyuck in a zoo (1984), zebras and elephants in the background=

“그 때 만든 곡들을 가끔 연주한다. 유치하지만 귀엽고 예쁜 느낌이 들어 동심으로 돌아가게 된다.”

“Sometimes I played the songs I wrote back then. They’re childish, but cute; and I find them beautiful it feels like I’m returning to innocence.”

After discharged from the police service, Seo Jae-Hyuck wrote a lot of songs. Just as singers who appeared on TV, he also wanted to stand on the stage. But everytime, he always felt unsatisfied with the songs he writes. He couldn’t write songs out of the pattern of religious hymn. He felt rock-ballad like a tall mountain he couldn’t pass through.

“이전까지 락 음악을 접할 기회가 거의 없었다. 심도 깊은 이해에 상당한 시간이 걸렸다.”

“I almost never had the opportunity to come accross rock music before. It took a very long time to make me really understand the spirit of it.”

He started to gradually grab of the basis of composition after he met Boohwal. The development was hidden in his hard work living a double life. While playing the bass, he separately spends the time learning to compose songs. If he hits a wall, he’d pour all his questions to Boohwal’s leader Kim Tae-Won whose in-charge of song composition. He was so obstinate and keen, that at one point Kim Tae-Won was so annoyed as if he was a cockroach.

Seo Jae-Hyuck’s growth (as a musician) was the start of a new turn for Boohwal. He widen the range of Boohwal’s music by writing songs of different genre, such as “노을” (Glow in the Sunset), “개미” (Ant), “또다시 사랑이” (Love, again), “섬” (Island), “파이란” (Failan), “Oz,” and others. The song “Glow in the Sunset” which was written in 2005, in particular, was inserted in the trailer of the movie “The Dirty Carnival,” and was loved by the public. So he thinks.

=Seo Jae-Hyuck (left and Bennie debuted in 2005 as “SangSang Band.” Due to an incident the team broke off.=

“내 곡들이 그간 부활 스타일과 조금 다르다. 한정된 느낌이 짙던 부활 음악의 껍질을 깨는데 일조하고 있다고 생각한다.”

“My songs are different fromBoohwal’s style. I think I contributed to peeling off the shell of Boohwal’s music that was monotonous.”

Although various songs were inserted into Boohwal’s album, he didn’t feel satisfied. He has an ambition about writing a song that touches people’s hearts. Thus he likes to open the window at his house and look down to the Han River. That’s his way of getting inspiration for his music.

“‘영화음악의 대부’ 엔니오 모리꼬네는 호수를 바라보면서 작곡을 한다고 하더라. 그래서 일부러 한강이 보이는 오피스텔을 집으로 구매했다.”

It was told that the “Godfather of movie soundtracks,” Ennio Morricone, likes to look at the lake when he composes. That’s why he bought a house in an apartment facing to the Han River.

As Kim Tae-Won, he doesn’t limit his ears. He starts and ends his day listening to jazz. He believes that one should always listen to music to be able to create new ideas. That’s why he keeps his hope. For a wide breadth of Boohwal’s music universe.

“젊은 친구들로부터 영감을 많이 받는 편이다. 가끔 ‘음악을 이렇게 풀어낼 수도 있구나’라고 흠칫 놀라기도 한다. 아무래도 부활에는 도움이 될 것 같다. 태원이형과 다른 스타일을 추구하다보니 음악이 더 풍성해지지 않을까.”

“I tends to get inspirations from young fellows a lot . Sometimes they even surprise me, making me think ‘Wow, you could also make music this way!’ I think it’ll be of help for Boohwal. Since the music I pursue is different with Tae-Won Hyeong’s style, I think it could enrich the width of Boohwal’s music.
