[Musical] Hedwig & The Angry Inch

The Musical “Hedwig and the Angry Inch” is a well-known musical originating from the Jane Theater in Broadway in 1998. The rock musical was written by John Cameron Mitchell, the original cast of the musical, and composed by the original guitarist, Stephen Trask. The musical is a concert-style performance, given by the fictional East German transgender rock singer Hedwig, her husband Yitzhak, and the band Angry Inch. Hedwigs monologue is based on the backdrop of the ballroom of Hotel Riverview, a slummy hotel located on the Hudson River in New Yorks western village, where the survivors of 1912 Titanic stayed. With rough and crude animation, and mind blowing punk rock, Hedwig is still recording sold-out shows in over 80 cities around the world.(Interpark)

The most stylish rock musical of this century since its premier in Korea in 2005, musical Hedwig has become one of the most celebrated musicals in Korea, with over 85% ticket sales per year. Top singers and and vocalists have had their share playing the part: 송용진 (Song Yong-Jin) 2005-2009, 김다현 (Kim Da Hyeon) 2005-2007, 이석준 (Lee Seok-Jun) 2006-2008, 엄기준 (Eom Ki-Jun) 2005, 김수용 (Kim Soo-Young) 2006, 조정석 (Jo Jeong-Seok) in 2006 and 2008, 조승우 (Cho Seung-Woo) 2007, 이주광 (Lee Joo-Kwang) 2008. Aside from Song Yong-Jin who was re-casted, 윤도현 (Yoon Do-Hyun), 송창의 (Song Chang-Ui), 유희석 (Yoo Hee-Seok), and 최재용 (Choi Jae-Young) was casted in 2009. Quite a long list, is it ^^

As the Angry Inch band, Boohwal’s 서재혁 (Seo Jae-Hyuck) and 채제민 (Chae Jemin), together with music producer/ guitarist 이준 (Lee Jun) have always been “permanent cast” from 2005 to 2008. Guitarist Zakky Kim, who was also a member of the project band “Little Wing” joined the Angry Inch band in 2006, and Guitarist 김민기 (Kim Min Gi) in 2008. Along with Yoon Do-Hyun, the whole YB band* members played the role of Angry Inch band in 2009.

The video below is I think an excerpt from Yoon Do-Hyun’s Love Letter in 2006, where they invited Hedwig’s cast into the studio. In the video below are 송용진 (Song Yong-Jin) and 김수용 (Kim Soo-Young) as Hedwig, 영진 (Yeong Jin) as Yitzhak, and 서재혁 (Seo Jae-Hyuck), 채제민 (Chae-Min), 이준 (Lee Jun), and Zakky Kim as the Angry Inch band.

Unfortunately “Hedwig and the Angry Inch” didn’t stage in Korea in 2010 when I first found out about them. If I remember correctly of my search results last year, they had always staged from the end of autumn to winter. Probably to recompense their absence last year, Hedwig will be on stage earlier this year, from May to August 2011.

Three new faces will play Hedwig role:최재웅 (Choi Jae-Woong), 김동완 (Kim Dong-Wan), and 김재욱 (Kim Jae Wook), along with 조정석 (Jo Jeong-Seok). The good news for me is that the original Angry Inch band is back, with of course 서재혁 (Seo Jae-Hyuck) and 채제민 (Chae Jemin) on stage~^^
