Attempting Change in  Boohwal

Released 19 July 2010, 8.50 pm

25 years-old Seo Jae-Hyuck was stupefied. The band Boohwal he joined for the first time was very disordered. Members who seemed to be getting together abruptly all of a sudden. The leader Kim Tae-Won was frequently drunk. He rolled up his arm sleeves, a job where he couldn’t even stand forward. He was so young. His knowledge about rock was not at all much.

Seo Jae-Hyuck was puzzled during the whole recording for Boohwal’s 7th album. While playing the bass, he kept thinking “am I doing the right thing”. A team that’s been through several discordant. He wanted so much to avoid that stigma that he wouldn’t himself let the same mistake to happen. He shut his eyes tight. Several times, he made up his mind to bear all things.

Each member’s individual desire was overwhelming. Their survival was on the line with the release of this new album, due to the low response they get from the 6th album. The problem was the system. They were far from a progressive environment. Non-existent professional producer. Everything was moving around the leader Kim Tae-Won. There was not a single member to ever argue about their music.

Seo Jae-Hyuck felt that there needs to be a change in the system. He threw the vague hope that “everything will be alright if the leader writes a good song.” He didn’t want to be a simply following member. He thinks, the main factor why a good song like “Lonely Night” had received a lower response than expected,  members’ lazyness was also a contributing factor.

Seo Jae-Hyuck difficultly pulled out the courage. He said with a half-shaking voice. “It’d be nice if we could have a deep discussion about fixing the melody or the direction of our music.” He couldn’t see the expression in the careful look Kim Tae-Won was giving him, for his eyes were covered with sunglasses. But he could read his mind in the answer coming a few moments later. “What is it that you see as problematic? You should say something.” It was a response saying that he’d positively accommodate his opinions.

Boohwal started to change little by little. Except for the direction of “Boohwal-style ballad,” all discussions were possible. They attempted recording several times for the key differences because of inserting or eliminating a certain melody. No body looked like they were having a hard time. On the other hand, they felt Boohwal was warm and comfortable just as mother’s hugs.

Seo Jae-Hyuck got used to so many things thanks to the active communication now. Typical of musicians’ insistence. Up until then, he despised artists who discuss profound music and act as if they know everything. However, he came to realize that expressing those opinions inside the team could become a driving force for the sake of team’s progress.

“I learn a lot from Tae-Won Hyeong. He’s more of a teacher than a leader (laughing). He might seem lazy, but he’s very much energetic and passionate about music that he’d even sacrifice his personal time.”

The seventh album was released after so much exchanges. The profit they made was low, but obviously something was different. The way public looked at Boohwal was different. They even had mania fans now. It was at about this point of time the fan club “Gathering for People who Love Boohwal” came to existence.

Assisting as a Bass Expert

Released 8 June 2010 (09.31 am)

11 February 1993, Seo Jae-Hyuck (right) posing with his friends in the graduation ceremony of Dongsan High School.

Spring 1990. There was a loud cheer in the Seo Jae-Hyuck’s church. They heard a surprising news. Jin Yeong-Seong, the bassist of the band “Black Rose” was appointed the church choir conductor. Seo Jae-Hyuck’s idolized “Black Rose.” With “Mugunghwa” and “Horang Nabi,” they were Seoul’s top three bands. Seo Jae-Hyuck, who learned bass autodidactly, was confident that he had nothing more to learn. Thus he was fluttering. It was like he was gonna be acknowledged by a maestro.

It wasn’t a mere confidence. He has been playing various musical instruments since he was little. Acoustic, electric guitar, piano, drum… he plays them all like an expert. He first had his eyes on bass in the second year of junior high school. He bought his friend’s bass half price, and practiced everyday with it.

He learned them all by self-learning. Music program on TV was his manual. He recorded the TV programs where Lee Mun-Se, Lee Tae-Yoon, Songgolme and watched them over and over to follow. That’s how he got used to the slap styles and others, and he was proud of it. He always aroused exclamations from his friends. Envious look around him. Seo Jae0Hyuck was getting sky-high little by little.

With four friends he visited the house of Jin Yeong-Seong. They played the bass in front of his house. Seo Jae-Hyuck was the last performer. As if ridiculing his friends’ performances, he showed all of his techniques. However, the feedback was disappointing.

Jin Yeong-Seong didn’t have his eyes on Seo Jae-Hyuck. He’s not talented enough. The reason was his long and thin fingers. In dealing with Western musical instruments, it’s a disadvantageous physical requirement. He never put interest on Seo Jae-Hyuck. He wanted to get his confidence back. Firmly determined, he was absorbed into practicing once again. The retreat he joined during the summer vacation was his starting line. He played the bass from 5 o’clock in the morning until the sun sets.

“I spent an average of 18 hours a day with bass. I might have played all of the hymn songs.”

His skills develop so much he wasn’t lagging even when compared to a professional musician. At one point he was most favorited to be recruited in a band in his vicinity. He enjoyed the stage performance. Thus his name was in as many as 5 different bands. His instrument of choice was not limited to bass. Drum, guitar, keyboard, and many others. He also sings bariton in a choir (could be duet, trio, or quartet).

A smooth highway in music. But his school grades were falling head over heels. From the top 5 ranking that he used to frequent, he dropped to below 40. He was not the least concern about it. Since the first year of high school, he’s made up his mind that he wanted to enter Seoul Institute of Arts and become a musician.

The problem was his family was against his will. His mother wished that his eldest son could enter university and live a normal life of a salaryman. She wanted him to concentrate on his studies so much that she’d even suggested the family to move to a place with a better environment. However, his son was stubborn (firm) with his intentions. So she put on some requirements. If he’d enter the university for 4 years, she’d buy him musical instrument. Seeing something of his appeal. Seo Jae-Hyuck gave up Seoul Institute of Arts. He entered the physics department in Suwon University instead.

He’s got the guitar and computer as promised. The bag full of physics books grew further from his sight. His previous dream was secretly growing again.

Boohwal in Green Plugged Festival

So, Green Plugged Festival. Just as my previous post, this is a last week happening ^^; Green Plugged Festival was a 2-days festival held on May 21st-22nd, in 노을공원 (Noul Park), which used to be a garbage dumping site, changed by the Seoul government (i guess..) to become this somewhat a nice park. No, no, don’t imagine flowers and butterflies, it’s basically just greens and some rather … not-so-friendly area ^^; Overall, I like the park for you can see Hangang (river) just lying wide, and on normal days there are barely people there.

Well, back to Green Plugged, the festival is held as an environmental campaign, so you can see how Noul Park is a perfect spot for it. The festival was for two days, and 115 bands, singers, bands, and musicians perform in 5 separate stages. The stages were: Earth, Sky, Moon, Sun, and Wind. All 5 stages were held simultaneously, so you gotta know who you’re coming to see and set up your schedule before hand.

I went to Boohwal’s concert on 21st, so I came to Green Plugged on 22nd of May, on which day Boohwal performed on EARTH STAGE starting 14.20 pm (3rd performer).

I arrived at Noul Park at around 1 o’clock, just as the first performer was wrapping up. I nicely sat as people started to leave the area (apparently they want to watch other stage performance). The band who performs before Boohwal was Buret, which was kinda good, but I couldn’t focus, coz I worried whether I should secure my spot earlier or not. From my seat, I moved to the right side of the stage which was guarded by staff, and nearing the front, I saw Seo Jae-Hyuck talking to someone!!!!

This picture below was actually taken after the stage, not before. He was actually closer to me before the stage, so I bowed (I’m such a polite fan, aren’t I?!) to him, and he waved at me!! 😉 (L-O-V-E H-I-M! lol :p) Soon, Chae Jemin joined him and the other guy, and I bowed again, this time heading to the drummer, and he also waved at me!! I LOVE THEM, REALLY! XD Some time after, Jeong Dong-Ha also approached them, but they all head back to the tents soon. When Jae-Hyuck Oppa waved at me, my friend was really surprised and excited she missed taking his picture (actually we took one, but the (guy who was talking with him)’s arm was on the way.. so..

So Boohwal stepped up the stage. Kim Tae-Won held by a guy (it was ascending^^;). I couldn’t grab the most front of the line, but I was second to front, and had practically clear access to all members of Boohwal so I ain’t complaining. Especially that Jae-Hyuck Oppa was right in front of me and he did see my way several times (or so I’d like to think :D)

They started with 사랑이란건, followed with 1970, Someday, and OZ. Three brilliant options, indeed. I was kinda sorry Jae-Hyuck Oppa didn’t do the same action he did the night before when playing OZ…

The concert continued with “Never Ending Story, and on the anchor call, they played 비와 당신의 이야기 (hm, I haven’t reviewed this song yet, haven’t I, I really should, and will! ^^). This time, Jae-Hyuck Oppa with his glasses and shirt on, I had my eyes on Tae-Won Oppa but his vocal wasn’t maximal that day – his guitar was ^^

They all went down the stage, and I got together with some more friends, still keeping an eye on the back stage. When we finally left to head for another stage, believe it or not, Boohwal was on two mini cars in front of us!!!! >_< So close, and no fans around!!!!! I could lose my mind, really >_< But due to my “civil fan” thingy (read: groggy) I couldn’t approach them. But Jemin Oppa was looking my way, so I yelled (said) “오빠 멋있어요!” and went on… Oh I hate myself.. -_-

I stayed in Green Plugged until the last stage that night. It was great, I was exhausted, but I wouldn’t trade it for anything else ^^ The last stage I watched was YB on the Sky Stage. They rock, too! ^_^

And, ow, did I tell you it started raining just about when Boohwal brought Yeah, as if the sky understood! -_-; It was chilly cold. But awesome! 🙂
